Before you immediately say no without even reading on, statistically, the answer is yes for most small business owners and solo-preneurs.
There are a two myths that could be reducing your income:
#1 The first myth is that most people don’t consider themselves to be in sales if they aren’t employed as a sales person.
#2 The second myth is that sales is hard edged, manipulative, unpleasant and confrontational–with a winner and a loser.
Busting this first myth is all about shifting your mindset. And your mindset is so important in your ability to be successful in presenting your products, services and business opportunities that we’re going to spend some time talking about this so you’re really clear before we get into the process of applying the system.
The truth is you’re already much better at sales than you give yourself credit for. In fact you spend quite a bit of your time every day in sales. Does that shock you? I can hear you saying to yourself, “She isn’t talking to me, I don’t like sales and I would never trick people like that.”
Sales is nothing more than persuading someone to go along with what you want; for instance when 2 people decide which movie to see. Or showing someone how you can solve their problem if they would just allow you to do it.
No tricks. Isn’t business about building relationships? So, in reality – relationships are relationships, whether business or personal. It’s really all the same at the most basic level. If you expect to have quality relationships, business or otherwise, you must be coming from a place of integrity, honesty and trust. If you aren’t, that’s where the feeling of manipulation comes from.
Let me ask you a question. If the person you care most about in the world were struggling with something that you could easily show them how to do faster, easier, better; would you feel like you had to manipulate them or would you just honestly tell them how you could help and why it would be to their benefit to let you?
Of course you wouldn’t use tricks to manipulate them! You would be speaking from your heart, helping them to understand how you can be of service. Why should that change when you are talking to anyone else?
So don’t be scared off by the word sales.
Here are 8 examples of where you are already doing it without being aware you are:
- You’ve been using sales techniques naturally, without any conscious thought since you were a toddler convincing another child to give you the toy they were playing with.
- How did you get a date each time you’ve wanted to go out with someone new?
- How do you think you convinced an employer they should hire you for the job instead of another equally qualified person?
- If you are a parent now, how do you get your kids to do what you want them to do?
- Are you ever in situations where you convince a group of people to do what you want?
- How do you end up eating where you want to eat?
- Are co-workers influenced by what you say or do?
- Have you ever hired someone to work for you?
Those are all examples of using sales techniques you have naturally.
If you don’t yet have your own business, the techniques and strategies you’ve been shown here. that you’re already capable of using, will be of great benefit to you to hone to a fine skill. The well being or success of all relationships is based on the ability to understand and be understood, which comes down to good communication skills.
That’s what your ability to get to yes without selling is all about.
