The other day I was asked to do 10 minutes on a radio show as a preview for a webinar I was doing for this organization. Rather than giving the host scripted questions, something intuitively said to just let her ask anything she wanted. To do this you have to be very confident in your ability to answer whatever could come up. If you’re an expert on your topic this should be no problem.
One of the reasons I like to do this is because as a business owner it’s easy to get caught up in telling the same story, doing the same interviews questions, having the same conversation over and over. Eventually you become detached format he process.
By receiving new perspective from someone outside the entire process, neither working for you or being a potential client, it gives you a chance to see and hear things differently.
I’m sure the last thing you want to hear if you’re struggling with all the day to day responsibilities of keeping your business running and making those sales, is that you have to change things up from time to time to keep them fresh. It’s a way of keeping yourself fully engaged and it keeps you curious about your own expertise.
Outside observers can bring up paradigm shifts for the simple fact that they aren’t involved in your industry. Just as a child makes things new again for a parent who has long forgotten to really see, the inquisitive outsider can ignite a new frame of reference or a new way of explaining a concept that gets you excited on a new level.
That kind of new passion, new curiosity, new possibility thinking leads to a higher level of engagement in the conversations you have with your potential clients…and that leads to more sales.
Here are the takeaways:
- Allow yourself to be open to questions
- Have a conversation with someone unfamiliar with your area of expertise
- Rediscover and re-ignite your passion with the information you receive
If your business isn’t one there you get interviewed, just sit down with a friend or family member who isn’t in the loop of your day to day business and let them ask you anything they want about the product or service you delver and see what you learn from the conversation.
I’d love to hear what comes of this process for you. Share your experience by posting your comment below.
