Does Your Life Purpose Sneak Up On You?

In May of 1999, I went for my first mammogram and was diagnosed with breast cancer. At that moment, when I came out of the doctor’s office, my priorities became crystal clear. But my real life purpose didn’t just jump out at me, it unveiled itself as I was ready to see it.

The point is that I instantly got clear on who I was and what I did and didn’t want in my life at that moment. One of the first things I recognized was that I no longer wanted to live in Mexico, and I didn’t want to do the work I was doing anymore. That cleared the way for something new to show up.

I knew there was something more important for me to do.

Living in Mexico was fun and I had a great life that many people would be envious of. I was making a great living. In fact, I could do my job in my sleep it was so easy for me. I was always working on my personal development, and I knew there was a reason I was learning all this, something bigger than my own growth.

So here I was, standing in that parking lot outside the doctor’s office, with my head spinning and my knees shaking. I was comforting my husband telling him everything was going to be fine and this was just one of those 2×4 moments instead of an aha moment.

Yes, I would have preferred to get the message that it was time for me to move on in a different way, but this was it. I was really determined to learn the lesson in this, and I knew deep down it was time for a major change in my life. So I was open to receive.

I didn’t instantly discover my passion, but I did open the door to receive it.

I don’t think your purpose just pops up one day out of the blue. If I look back at my life, there were a lot of signs I was preparing for my purpose long before I even knew it. And you could probably look back at your life and see a whole lot of clues leading to your passion as well.

It’s almost like you’re in a training program for your purpose before you even realize what it is. I could go back many years in my life and connect the dots to where I am now.

I’m very clear on my purpose now, but it hasn’t always been that way. I moved back from Mexico to the States because I felt there was something bigger I was supposed to be doing with my life.

I went to bed every night praying for my purpose to be revealed. Eleven months later, I knew something major was about to happen. I had just gone through a goal-setting process I do from time to time, and this time it felt totally different. It was obvious to me this was a turning point and the unveiling of my purpose was near.

Would you have waited that long or given up and gotten a job?

I didn’t give up because I was clear that something was shifting, even if I had no idea what that ‘something’ was.

Two weeks later, the vehicle for my destiny appeared. I won’t go into the details, but the most important thing is that once I made a plan and had my goals set, the way appeared. The key point is that when it showed up, I recognized it because I had done the work. I had created a new, deeper vision for my life.

I was prepared, and I was open for whatever appeared. I was also prepared for the possibility that it may not look the way I would expect it to. So in other words, I had to be open for my purpose to come from unexpected sources.

Doesn’t it make sense when you think about it? If your purpose was coming from somewhere you already knew and expected, wouldn’t you already be doing it instead of being in a situation where you are still searching?
