Question: I’m a professional sales person and the industry I’m in is hard hit by the economy. I’ve recently moved to an area where I believe I can make more money but I’ve already changed places I’m working twice in the last 3 months. Now I’m looking to make another move to where it looks like people are doing better. I’m not sure if I’m chasing my tail or if I should make the move. I know you were in sales and wondered if you’ve experienced this and have any advice?

Answer: I can feel the pressure you’re experiencing in your message. Do I stay or do I go is always such a difficult decision for people. It doesn’t matter if it’s business or personal relationships.

In this situation, since you’ve made a move to another area and have now worked at 2 places, you may want to consider doing a Ben Franklin close on yourself. If you’re not familiar with it, that’s where you sit down and write the reasons to stay where you are on one side of the page and the reasons to leave on the other. Be realistic about the benefits of where you are now and the long term potential. Then do the same for the location you’re looking at going to.

Don’t be swayed by the fact that on a particular day when you have a conversation with someone they tell you things are going great and they are making tons of money. Salespeople can be very up and down depending on how their own week or month is going. The next day you could talk to that same person and hear the opposite if they have a bad day.

Bottom line, make the decision based on your needs and how you feel your skills level would play out at this new location. The one thing to keep in mind is that if you are desperate, subconsciously it comes through to your prospects and they won’t buy from you. Try to be as calm and centered and positive as possible each day when you go to work. Starting your day with meditation and keeping a gratitude journal are great ways to keep you in a good emotional state.
