Question: I’ve committed to write a book. I have an agent that’s excited bout my book proposal. For some reason I’ve been dragging my feet on the actual writing for over a year now. To be perfectly honest, I haven’t talked to my agent in a while. I don’t know if she’s still interested. I’m afraid to call her in case she’s given up on me.
I have written articles for many years. I’m not sure why I can’t get this book going. I can’t even write a blog on it. I feel like it has to be perfect and I don’t know how to stop that. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: I can almost give you the same exact answer I gave to last week’s question!
If it’s been well over a year since you created your book proposal, subconsciously there may be a part of you that has grown beyond that original concept and you need to update the proposal because it’s not the book you really want to write any more. Better to find that out now while you can start fresh.
Pay attention, there’s a reason you’re resisting writing if you are a long time writer. Find out what that is. If you’re judging yourself too harshly, that’s one thing, but it may be more than that.
In the last 10 years of creating my own products and also helping my clients do the same, one of the blocks I commonly find is too much stuff to go through is overwhelming. In fact, the thought of going through tons of stuff to find what you want and then having to read it and organize it is such a huge task it overwhelms you to the point of not taking action. Are you thinking you can use your old articles for the book?
Again, does it represent the best you have to offer in your current thinking? If not, start fresh.
Yes you can reference docs that are new enough you can readily put your finger on them, but the older stuff may not give you your full knowledge base to start with. And you don’t want to write a book or create a program with less than your best wisdom, do you?
