As a small business owner, long before you opened the doors to your business, you had a vision. I’m not just talking about a picture in your mind of what it would look like when your business was successful, but also a vision of how it fit in your life and what it would provide for you.
Some business owners take it one step further and actually create a written vision of what they expect from their business. And some may even create a vision board to have a visual representation of what the successful business will look like and also a board of what that success will bring to your lifestyle.
And yet the reality most often is quite different.
In working with busy online and offline entrepreneurs as well as brick and mortar businesses, I see women who are exhausted. You tell me you’re working more hours and working harder than you ever did when you had a ‘job’. And worse yet, this dream of having your own business has now taken over your whole life. And the last comment I hear from the majority of women is you still have other responsibilities of family and friends and there just is no time to take care of you.
I know that wasn’t part of your vision. Nobody gets into business dreaming of 12-20 hour days, 6-7 days a week for less money than they made working for someone else and having no responsibilities. In fact many women, after struggling in their business for a couple years, think, at least for a moment about going back to the simplicity of just putting in those 40-50 hours a week and getting a paycheck.
What are the top 3 reasons your vision and your results aren’t a match?
#1 Your vision wasn’t grounded in reality
#2 You had no plan beyond the initial dream
#3 You looked at the outside appearance of a similar business and it looked easy
And here’s how you can remedy the situation today:
#1 Create a new vision based on the experience you’ve had in your business up to now. You’ve got a heavy dose of the reality of what it takes to run your business. Based on this level of knowledge, what do your really want to create from this point forward? Give yourself a do over. Make a new, reality based, vision.
#2 Now that you have your vision, create the step by step blueprint of what you need to do this year to realize that vision. Then break it down to quarterly goals, monthly measurements, weekly and daily actions and routines. The more you can set up routines, checklists and systems, the easier your business will flow.
#3 You have a real picture format he inside of exactly what it’s going to take to now match your vision and results. With the process you’ve created format he first 2 steps here, you can look at how you are going to make your business more manageable. You can create spaces where you can give yourself a break. You can take some time away from your business, even a day off!
Look at the routines you’ve set up and see where you can compress time by grouping similar activities together. When you do that, you can complete those tasks quicker. When your brain has to change to gears to do something complete different, you waste time. The same thing happens when you allow interruptions. It takes several minutes to get back into the frame of mind you were in to get the original task completed.
So set chunks of time for different types of activities. You’ll find with your new vision, your realistic blueprint and your new scheduling, you can create and enjoyable, profitable business that doesn’t take up your entire life or make you want to run for the hills. And now you can live from a vision that will create matching results.
