While a core component to your success in business and in life is the vision you hold, a critical part to that is to enjoy the journey. In fact, the journey is the acting out of your vision of how you plan to create the life of your dreams. The journey never ends.
Only your current end result you’re moving toward shifts and changes as goals are accomplished or interests change.
So, relax and have a good time now.
Why wait until you earn your 1st million, your next million, your kids go to college, or you retire? If you need permission, you have my permission to relax and enjoy the journey. How you create the life of your dreams is not dependant on a particular event occurring.
Who ever started the theory of keeping your nose to the grindstone and working hard for 40 years and then enjoying your retirement?
I’m sure whoever it was regretted living that philosophy when he got to the end of his life. Live while you’re alive.
Don’t let great things in your life come and go without squeezing every drop of enjoyment out of them.
Goals and checklists and timelines all have their place.
Just don’t lose sight of the experience of the Now while you’re moving forward. This is a skill you can teach yourself through practice and reminders. Look up from the computer, walk outside, smell the roses.
Before my Yorkie Sam died she was my alarm for taking breaks. Every 90 minutes to two hours, she would paw at my chair. If I kept working she would get more persistent until I had to get up and take her outside. She just wanted attention for a few minutes. We’d walk around the pool, take a stroll around the different garden areas of the yard and then back to work. She got what she wanted and I took a break.
One of my biggest missed opportunities to enjoy the moment was my first wedding (a very long time ago). I don’t recall the wedding or the reception. No, I wasn’t drinking. Being a perfectionist, I was so busy making sure every detail was perfect and everyone had a good time, and the decorations and flowers and food, that I wasn’t really present to the experience at all. It was the biggest day of my life up to that point and I missed it!
How many events in your life have gone the same way?
It doesn’t need to be that way at all.
Funny how perfection and control usually go together, isn’t it?
Relaxing and enjoying your life may be a foreign concept to you now, but take my word for it, giving up some of the details to have time to enjoy your life is definitely worth it.
Hire people to do everything you don’t truly enjoy. Spend that new found time having fun.
Having goals doesn’t mean you don’t have a life while you’re achieving them.
When you are working your plan to create the life of your dreams, you want to be focused, but not wearing blinders. This is the best gift you can give to yourself and the people you care about. Don’t make the mistake of sacrificing the enjoyment of today, waiting for someday. Enjoy the journey now.

Lynn, this is a very powerful article. I started my banking career after college in the 1980s, and career was god to finance grads like me at that time, although I knew deep down I was not resonating with that philosophy. Now I am working on moving to a soloprenuer lifestyle within the next few years. Thank you for your great work. I have a few of your info products and they are excellent.
