| Question: I’m writing a part of my book that includes some personal stories that are bringing back the pain of the situation. Is it best for me to process the feelings I’m having and then go back to writing? My concern is that my emotions will color my writing.John
Answer:
One of the reasons I believe so many aspiring authors take years to write their book rather than days (yes, really) is because they are too much in their head. Don’t process unless it has you spinning completely out of control beyond your ability to sit down and write about it.When you have been given a gift to share you are short changing the reader by making it pretty and whitewashing the details because you don’t think anybody wants to hear about your personal stuff.
Your personal stuff is exactly what gives you the expertise to teach this. Trial by fire; you lived through it and came out the other side. And you were given the gift of being able to break down the process in a way that other people can follow and do the same. You must share the whole story. The Universe is helping you write by bringing back the feelings for you to accurately portray how the reader will recognize when they are having this experience. You’re going to walk them through how it feels in your body, what emotions you’re having and also what thoughts you’re having. Your reader needs to hear this from you for two reasons: 1. To know that they are not the only one who feels this way and there is help.2. That you are the person who can help them because they see that you understand what is going on with them in a way nobody has ever shared before. Now they have hope of a way out. If you put yourself on a pedestal by only telling part of the truth in your stories, you reader will feel disconnected from you and that’s the last thing you want if your purpose is to show the way to as many people as possible. |
The amazing serial entrepreneur, Art Linkletter, passed away early today at 97. He was an incredible man and an inspiration for entrepreneurs with his visionary business acumen. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the very first seminar I ever attended. He will be missed.
