What price are you willing to pay to live the life of your dreams? Are you paying that price now or do you believe the attainment of your dream is not really possible so you only go after it intermittently or on a small scale? Or have you not even dared to dream of something more?
Just to let you off the hook a title bit, it’s not just you. Most people, except the truly successful, hedge their bet. As a society we tend to do it in everything; whether it’s grades in school, athletic performance, letting someone you’re in a relationship know how you really feel, giving 100% effort to your business, or going full out for your dreams and giving voice to your passion.
But why? What are we protecting ourselves from? Failure, or fear of the unknown if we succeed?
In The Witch of Portobello, author Paulo Coelho writes “…we were living in an age in which slavery was the only path to happiness. Free will demands immense responsibility; it’s hard work, it brings with it anguish and suffering.”
Is that what keeps you from giving yourself completely to the attainment of your dreams?
I think what Paulo Coelho said so eloquently relates to how it’s much easier to fall into lock step with the masses and just stick with the herd rather than taking responsibility for your life and saying, out loud, what you want. What that creates is slaves to the mass mentality. You give up your freedom for the safety of being invisible in the group. And worst of all, you call that blending in happiness.
And if you do look for a way to create e better life, you look for the magic bullet version. You look for the path that guarantees you’ll get everything you want in 7 days or 3 quick and easy steps. Because when it doesn’t work you want to quickly and safely get back in line with everybody else without it being noticed you made an attempt at something bigger.
Where does that get you?
Unless you really break free, and are willing to do the work it’s going to take, where it gets you is a life of mediocrity. And I know that’s not what you want for yourself. I know what you really want is to become the person you are meant to be.
In my book Breakthrough to Success I talk about the 19 keys to mastering every area of your life. If you want to be the one to create your life, you have to step up and take on the job. It requires breaking free of the noise and listening to your inner voice, or in some cases, finding that voice for the first time. It’s not something that happens in an instant. And yet, you do make that decision in an instant. Then you have to allow the time to retrain your mind and create new pathways for new beliefs to take hold. But practicing the consistency of installing new beliefs and habits is not a big price to pay for the life you really want, is it?
A quote I love from author U.S. Anderson is, “I do not seek, I know. I do not strive, I am guided.” He’s talking about listening for the truth of who you really are. This occurs when you connect with your higher self, Universal Mind, God, whatever you choose to call it. Meditation, prayer and yoga are all great ways of getting to that quiet place where you can listen and hear something besides your own mind chatter.
When you take to heart the words of that quote and sit in stillness to receive guidance, you’ll be amazed how quickly your life will shift and new opportunities will show up and you’ll believe in yourself enough to act on them. And before you know it, you may just start to believe that the life of your dreams could be within your grasp…if you just have the courage to go for it.
