Question: I come from the corporate world and after retiring, for the last few years I’ve been working as an employee in a small business. Now I’m looking at a starting my own business as a consultant.
I’m wondering if it’s good to license course material from other content providers I’ve seen in my industry or if I should crete my own. I’m worried that will take too long and postpone starting my business.
Answer: Chance are you have plenty that you’ve learned over the years of your corporate career and now working with a small business owner.
As a consultant, don’t’ assume that it’s going to be necessary for you to have course materials. You could be hired for your expertise in a particular area you have knowledge in or to perform or teach their people how to perform certain task and functions that don’t take course material.
So don’t wait to start your business. Look at what you have to offer right now. That being said, you can have larger fees when you are considered an authority by having something as easy to produce as a book. Being an author changes the playing filed in most environments.
If you’ve been studying information marketing for a while, being an author may have lost some of it’s cache when they are everyone. But in most businesses, nobody knows an author personally. So think about your first step being to author and book. With some help, you can have a book published very quickly.
