It’s the holiday season and our thoughts are temporarily moving away from business (maybe) to thoughts of one of two things, or most likely both.
First is how to give meaningful gifts to people we care about.
Second is the debate about whether this is a ‘holiday season’ thing or a celebration of your religious beliefs?
Every type of media is filled with holiday sales, without mentioning the word Christmas, and telling us what our loved ones really want. The worst part is the message that your love is measured by the gift you give and where you get it. Anyone waiting for a certain little blue box? Ladies?
This pressure the media puts on parents leads to middle of the night stampeders at toy stores and camping out at your local discount store. What does this teach children about the meaning of Christmas, sorry, ‘the holiday season’?
I was a black belt shopper right up until I moved out of the country and had no choice but to go cold turkey and find another way of expressing my love for people than buying stuff.
I broke the habit during the years I lived in Mexico, not by choice but because there was no shopping to speak of where I lived. Interestingly I found I didn’t really need all the things I had previously wanted. I came to the realization that maybe I wanted them just because other people had them or they were heavily advertised. I became accustomed to putting up all my Christmas decorations and a beautiful tree with no gifts under it. Here’s a photo of my living room in ’96.
I loved to cook and bake back then so I got a great deal of joy out of baking my butt off and giving big boxes of homemade cookies and fudge to all my friends and taking more to work. I loved the
enjoyment everyone got out of receiving these gifts.
Since moving back to the states 10 years ago, I have avoided getting into the commercial trap of Christmas. Not running around like a crazy person shopping for gifts has freed up a lot of time to spend doing things that are more meaningful to me and the people I love.
As a business owner, sometimes you lose focus of why you are on the path to become wealthy
and financially independent. The holidays can serve as a good reminder.
- Are you doing what you do to amass a fortune just so you won’t have to work anymore?
- Are you doing it to give your kids a better life than you had?
- Is there a purpose much bigger than what’s going on in your own life?
- Is there something you feel compelled to share with the world?
- Will having more money and more time allow you to share it in a bigger way?
My holiday wish for you is this:
I want to see you fully offering your gifts to the world. I hope you will live from your passion and purpose. During this time of holiday joy, please take the time to reflect on what your purpose is and how well you are living it.
Until next week, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Just comment on this post on my blog at http://www.LynnPierce.com
