It’s sure fun to start something new, isn’t it?
You’re excited to open that new book and start reading.
You’re excited to try the new restaurant.
Maybe you’re even excited to start that new work out program.
But what about business projects?
How excited are you about things like getting your taxes done, setting up that new client intake process, getting that new website done or writing the copy for that new product? Do you keep putting off getting those new videos edited or finishing that book you’ve been writing for the last year?
Do you find that you get off to a fast start, full of passion, with a big vision, and then your excitement slows. Before you know it you’re sitting with a project that’s 95% done and yet it just doesn’t get finished.
Did you think you were the only one that did this?
You’re not, but that doesn’t make it any better. Don’t even try to hide behind that one! It’s still one of the biggest blocks to success you’ll have. You’re great at starting, but not so good, or even really bad, at finishing.
Why is it so hard to just get it done?
For one thing, there’s fear of finishing because once you finish things could change in your life. And most likely they will. The fear is that you don’t know if you’ll experience success or failure. And given your creative mind, you can make both of those options look pretty scary.
Scenario #1
Your life changes in a good way or you even experience a huge financial gain. And yet you’re scared because it’s fear of the unknown. How much money, what will that do to your tax bracket???
Scenario #2
Whatever you’re doing doesn’t play out the way you had hoped and you could be embarrassed, called out, vilified, humiliated or suffer a huge financial loss. Now even if this is taking things a little far, in your mind you go way beyond the real scope of what will likely happen when you are forecasting your fears, don’t you?
So if you are consciously or unconsciously having these disasterous thoughts, are you surprised you start dragging your feet and thinking of more things you have to learn or have to research before you’re ready to finish?
Even if you’re thinking that your project will be such a huge success that your life will change forever and you’ll be rich beyond your dreams, you’re still racked with fear that all your friends will leave you and your family will change and you’ll have to move to Hollywood…who knows where your mind will take you.
And this fear of the unknown, even though it’s all good, will freeze you in inaction. I hear people say all the time that they want to move slow because they’re not sure they are ready for all the changes success will bring. The sad part is that everyone seems to be prepared for the change that failure would bring.
If you hear yourself saying that and your rationalization is that you’re just being realistic, stop that!
Do you really think the Universe would give you this gift and have you create what ever you are not finishing right now, and then put you in a situation that would harm you or make you unhappy as your reward for sharing your gift?
Of course not! So stop thinking up all these ways for this to put you into total overwhelm if you finish and instead look for the help of someone who sees this process as really simple and easy. Let them guide you through the places that are keeping you stuck so that you can finish.
If you do this once, I promise you that the next project you do, it’s not near as likely you’ll freeze up. And if you do, you’ll recognize it quicker and get help so you’ll be in and out of that stuck place in no time flat.
Just do it!
