Client Q & A

Question: I know you’ve talked before about how important it is to share your personal story, but how do I know when I’ve crossed the line and shared something that will hurt how my customers look at me or makes me look bad or not like an expert?

I’m just starting my blog and I’m not sure how much of me should be in there if it’s primarily for my business.

Thanks,
Carol

Answer: This is a struggle that many entrepreneurs have. It doesn’t matter if it’s in your blog, in speaking from the stage, in a product you’re creating or in a book you’re writing.

I can’t over-emphasize how important it is to make a connection with your audience in whatever format you are approaching them. You have to use common sense when it comes to being appropriate, but other than that, be as transparent as possible.

As aware of this as I am, I had a great example of having my perception of a couple people completed turned on it’s ear this weekend. I was at an event for very successful people in the network marketing company I work with. I have heard personal stories from, I would guess, close to 100 multi-millionaires in the company since I joined 10 months ago. But this was different. A handful of them parted the curtain and shared the rest of the story.

It was so emotional and impactful I can’t even tell you. These powerful leaders that I had assumed had it all together shared heartbreaking stories of things they had gone through and for some, what could be considered stupid mistakes that cost them everything and they had to rebuild their entire business again.

In each situation I would have had no idea had they not shared.

The sharing did two things:

1. It showed that they were human and had worked through some things others may not have survived personally or in their business. So if they made it through those situations, I had nothing to ever complain about.

2. It made me feel closer to them and it was a profound bonding experience with an even higher level of respect for them knowing what I now know. I saw how brave they were sharing painful experiences and some that didn’t make them look so good.

Your clients and prospective customers will feel the same way when you share, so go for it.
