Question: I’m in the process of writing a book with a ghost writer. My agent recommended 3 ghost writers, but strongly suggested I go with 1 who had written best sellers for a couple friends of mine. I’m uncomfortable with this because my book is more personal growth and theirs were both business. How do I get my voice out in a ghost written book like this?
Frank
Answer: I don’t know if you’re completely having it written for you or if you are doing a first draft or possibly giving your ghost writer articles or notes to draw from.
These are all different writing situations. If your topic is fairly generic and your book can be compiled by your ghost writer going out and doing research and then adding your voice from reading other things you’ve written that might work.
Personally, I’ve never used a ghost writer. I have read books by people I know and later found out those books weren’t written by the ‘author’. That worked. But at the same time, there are people who have outsourced their social media and it’s easily recognizable that it’s not really them. To me that hurts a person’s credibility.
So in the end, this has to be your decision of what you feel comfortable with and who you choose to have doing the writing and how much.
