Are you fully present as you perform all the activities that make up each of your days? I’m assuming you said no.
No matter how hard we try, it takes a lot to be fully present in every second. What? Did you just drift off there? Caught you!
Seriously, what a great goal it would be to remind yourself throughout the day to just be a little more in the present moment than you were the day before. Stop and smell the roses, so to speak. Look beyond the big picture and take in the richness of the details of your life.
Because really, the pleasure of life is all in the details and your ability to recognize them and breathe them in.
The benefits are beyond measure but you can’t comprehend what that would even feel like until you live in a place of being present.
When my 15 year old female Yorkie, Sam, passed away suddenly while I was out of town I was beyond grief-stricken. But at the same time, I knew our relationship was complete. I was good. There was nothing I wished I could have done except say goodbye to her before she was buried.
I was at peace because I felt like I was always fully present in the time we spent together. As she got older I was even more vigilant about planting movies in my mind of our time together.
Do you consciously create memories of things that are important to you, whether it’s people are occasion you want to be able to savor over and over in detail?
I’m so grateful that in the last year of her life, as her sight and hearing faded, I made it a point to cradle her in my arm every morning in bed and put her little heart on my chest so our hearts were beating together and we were breathing together and I was fully present. And as I would pet her head and she’d fall asleep for a few minutes, I was recording it all on the movie camera in my mind for a moment just like this when she was gone.
I paid attention to the small stuff and now more than any of the stories of…remember when we did this or went there, I have that most personal and intimate, fully present memory of the details of who she really was.
Ok, if you don’t have furry children this may sound insane to you, but substitute your child or your spouse for Sam and tell me if you’ve been paying attention to the small stuff in your life.
Start today because I guarantee you that if something happens and you never have another chance to create a memory with that person, you’ll be as grateful as I am that you paid attention, you were fully present and you realized that the big stuff takes care of itself just fine if you pay attention to the details.
And guess what, it’s not different in your business than it is in your personal life. It’s true that the money is in your database, but your fortune is in paying attention to the small stuff.
The big stuff is easy. You have processes, step-by-step plans, blueprints, mentors, coaches, people you can observe and model. Plenty of people can give you the tools for the big stuff.
The reason most people fail is because the don’t see the nuances, they don’t know how to zero in on the small stuff that can totally change the game. One small tweak can double your sales. One small gesture can land you your biggest client. One kind word can create a life-long relationship.
So don’t let anybody tell you different, life is all about the small stuff. So go out and have a fully present day!
