Question: I was having an organic conversation on a flight with someone I thought would be a good prospect for my business and somehow after an hour long conversation I wasn’t any closer to getting the appointment. I’m not sure what happened. We had good rapport, I found out about her family and could never create the interest. Help!!!

Answer: Without having heard any of the conversation I can only tell you what I’m getting from your question. My initial reactions would be that you had your normal initial contact conversation out of order.

This happens when a conversation is organic and flows all over the place…and then you never get where you intended to go.

What happens is that you will usually start talking about your business too early this way. Instead of asking questions and getting a really good picture of who your prospective client is and what their true needs and desires are, you get bits and pieces scattered throughout the conversation. Plus this level of conversation doesn’t warrant you asking the second and third level questions that access the real needs of your client, not just the surface level facts a casual conversation will access.

Knowing your logical process for this conversation and keeping the steps in order is possible in an organic conversation. First you have to have a sales system in place and then it just takes a little practice to keep it in your head. Then as you’re talking to people you won’t get too far ahead of yourself only to find at the end of the flight that you lost your prospect somewhere over Nebraska!
