Are You Leading Your Tribe?

November 28, 2009

Who are you upsetting?

Who are you connecting?

Who are you leading?

Your tribe is waiting for you to tell them where to go next.

Watch Seth Godin, author of “Tribes” at Ted.

Thanks to Nick Gilboy for taking notes and posting this comment on the Ted site:

“What leaders have in common”

1. They challenge the status quo: Challenge everything. They challenge what is currently there.
2. They build a culture: “A secret language, a 7-second handshake, a way of knowing whether you are in or you are out.
3. They have curiosity: “about the people in the tribe, and about outsiders.”
4. They connect people to one-another. They allow people to achieve what they want more than anything….to be missed!”
5. All tribal leaders have charisma. BUT, you do not need charisma to be a tribal leader. Leading a tribe gives you charisma. If you look and study the leaders throughout history, you will see where the charisma comes from. It comes from the leading.
6. They Commit: They commit to the cause, they commit to the tribe, they commit to the people.

Thanksgiving: The Gift of Giving and Receiving

November 26, 2009

Yesterday I thought about all the things I’m grateful in my life in preparation for today being Thanksgiving. I don’t know about you, but I do this on a daily basis in my journal. It’s something that keeps me grounded and focused on what’s good in my life.

Giving thanks relies on your ability to give and receive and acknowledge what others have contributed to your life as well as what you have created for yourself and how you contribute to others.

Your ability to give is the reflection, acknowledgment and appreciation of what you have received.

There are many ways you can give love by giving thanks:
* You can teach what you’ve learned
* You can give your time
* You can give your attention
* You can give your ideas
* You can give your money to a cause you believe in

When I look at the totality of my life, I’ve had a pretty great life that I’m very grateful for. At the same time, nobody’s life is a straight line to the top.  There are times when you hit bottom and there are times when you really depend on the support of your friends who love you.

I’m no history teacher, but I can tell you that all those years ago when the pilgrims came to this country, it was no day at the beach. They had a lot to deal with just to stay alive and make a new home for themselves.

And yet at that one point in time they came together to give thanks. And when I look at the struggles many people are going through right now, I know that no matter what your personal situation we can all find things we are grateful for today.

Personally, I’ve been married and divorced a couple times. I’ve had lots of money and I’ve been close to broke a few times. I’ve also had a couple brushes with life threatening illness. And yet whether happy times or times of struggle, neither defines us. Those are all circumstances that pass by and in the end it doesn’t make any difference the label we put on them. The only thing that matters is being grateful for the lessons they bring us.

I have so many things I’m grateful for that may not have showed up if not for those difficult situations. For one thing, I developed much deeper relationships with my friends and found some new friends. I’ve allowed myself to be much more open and honest and vulnerable in my life and I’m very grateful for the wonderful gifts I’ve experienced because I’ve opened my heart in that way.

Over the years, especially since writing, “Change One Thing, Change Your Life”, I’ve discovered that most people either have a difficult time with giving or receiving.

Today, take a look at which is easier for you to do.  If you can give all day long but find it difficult to allow someone to do something for you, give that pleasure to someone who loves you today and let them experience how wonderful it feels to give.

If you’re one of those people who is good about receiving, but maybe you’ve convinced yourself you don’t have anything worth giving, just try giving a little bit to someone you love today and see what happens.  How about saying something nice and watching how that makes the other person light up.  That’s your gift.

This is a day for stepping out of your normal comfort zone and really experiencing what Thanksgiving is all about.  I promise you’ll feel better at the end of the day for doing it.

Until next week, I’d love to hear your thoughts.  Just comment on this post on my blog at http://www.LynnPierce.com

My guest on “Success Blueprint Radio” yesterday was Dr. Gayle Carson, known as “The Spunky Old Broad”. The show airs live every Wednesday at 4PM EST, where you can ask your questions or submit them ahead of time at http://SuccessBlueprintRadio.com

Gayle has a Success Blueprint that is valuable beyond her 50 years experience as an entrepreneur, as if that isn’t reason enough to listen! Gayle started her first business right out of school when she moved to Miami with no money and gave herself 2 weeks to make something happen…and she did.

Today Gayle is still beginning new business ventures and has enough energy to put women in their 30’s to shame-ask the women in her gym every morning!

She also gave us some great insight into how a successful relationship can allow you to be more successful in your business. And at age 99 how her mother was still her best mentor.

You can listen now here and don’t forget to leave your comment and link it back to your website for some added Google ranking for yourself.

There’s no “Must See” Promotion this week.  I want to help you with a challenge you are facing, so answer the two questions in the post above this one and I look forward to connecting with you personally.

Life happens, be ready for it.

Set your goals high enough that they require you to stretch your comfort zone and you’ll be amazed what you can achieve. Ask yourself, “What’s the one thing I can change this year to create the life of my dreams?”

Are Your Intentions and Attention Blocking Your Success?

November 19, 2009

Are your intention and attention focused on the same thing?

Are you absolutely sure?

Because if they aren’t you won’t be getting the results you desire. And I would venture to say that the results you do get are after some struggle and difficulty that leaves you wondering if it was worth all the effort.

As entrepreneurs we are often balancing on the edge of the sword.

Having the qualities that make you a great entrepreneur can also, on the flip side, become the same reason you fail to reach your goals. What that means is that if you don’t keep a careful eye on yourself, your best strengths will become your worst challenges.

George S. Patton signed photo by U.S.

Here’s an example:

You have a never say die attitude. You’re like George Patton on the battlefield when it comes to your determination and stick-to-it motto. That’s good, right? Entrepreneurs don’t quit and run away.

So you keep barreling ahead, if it takes all night, if it takes all weekend, you’re going to finish the project…

Which is great if your intention and your attention or in alignment and you are focusing all that effort on the proper activity to move you forward.

But how do you know the difference between going through a wall and just banging your head against it? Or as Stephen Covey says, “Putting your ladder of success up against the wrong wall.”

Not giving up and determination can become the blinders and stubborn part of you that prevents you from seeing that you’re going down the wrong road. You are so proud of yourself for not giving up that you fail to realize that it’s difficult or even impossible for you to succeed because you’re doing the wrong thing.

Let’s hope that you come to this realization before you’ve gone so far down the wrong road that you can’t find your way back, or it’s  extremely costly in time and money to get back. Unfortunately I see people waking up to this situation all the time.

So let’s break this down.

What is your intention?

Your intention is to complete this process that you’re in and have the result be success.

If you’re like most people, your attention is on the part of completing at all costs and that’s where everything can go terribly wrong. By simply shifting your attention to the other part of the sentence and focusing on the result being success, you’ll open a space to see things differently.

Then when you begin to struggle, instead of bearing down and putting on those blinders, you’ll do the opposite.

Because your attention is now aligned with your intention, you’ll stop, lift your head, look around to see where you are and what’s really going on here. From this new vantage point course correction is much easier, the path becomes clear and success is at hand.

Until next week, I’d love to hear your thoughts.  Just comment on this post below.
